white wine

Which white wine?

PCC Taste | August 2013

White wine gleams with summertime refreshment, chilling serenely on even the hottest days. Each varietal or blend offers its own unique appeal that can perfectly accent foods from spicy Thai to downhome barbecue. Discover which white suits you best, with help from PCC assistant wine merchandiser Erica Boberg.

If you like

Sweet and aromatic — Think Riesling, Gewurztraminer, Moscato

And you're eating

Spicy foods, such as Thai — The residual sugars in sweeter white wines help coat the mouth and temper spiciness.

May we suggest

Cascinetta Vietti Moscato d'Asti — A light, sparkling white that's delicately sweet, with a hint of fresh apricots and lemon zest and made in the Piedmont region of northern Italy.

Naches Heights Vineyard Riesling — LOCAL! Clean and crisp with flavors of fresh white peach, crisp green apple and accents of slate, crafted in Washington's sun-drenched Yakima Valley.

If you like

Crisp, dry and refreshing — Think Pinot Gris, Chenin Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Grigio

And you're eating

Seafood, salads, pasta or you seek a versatile white you can bring to a party that will drink well with any potluck dish.

May we suggest

Lost River Salish Sea White — LOCAL! Crafted exclusively for PCC, this union of Chenin Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Gris is an easy-drinking wine with a cool foundation, crisp acidity and distinctive local aromas of wild brush and citrus blossoms.

Chinook Wines Long Live The Kings — LOCAL! A fetching weave of lemon, Asian pear and apple notes. Sales of this wine, only available at PCC, support salmon habitat restoration.

If you like

Mighty, full-bodied — Think Chardonnay, Viognier

And you're eating

Steak, ribs, lamb, pork or other bold, savory foods that call for a wine that won't fade into the background.

May we suggest

Tortoise Creek Wines Jam's Blend — Boasts the creamy body of an oaked Chardonnay without too much oak, letting the grape show its true form of pear, citrus and white flowers; it's also certified sustainable by the Lodi Rules.

Ontañon Viura Rioja — This Spanish white wine is 100 percent Virua, made by third-generation winemakers and is exclusive to PCC. Lovely, lively nectarine aromas segue to sassy citrus, with a kiss of exotic spice.
