la mode

Beyond your basic vanilla

ice cream and pie

In this country, la mode means "with ice cream" — whether it's served atop apple pie, angel food cake, scones or rich, fudgy brownies from the PCC Bakery. Vanilla ice cream is the sweet tradition, but other tempting dynamic duos abound.

With berry pies — Snoqualmie Ice Cream's Crme Fraiche gelato lends a creamy, cheesecake flavor. Also fun: Double Rainbow Blueberry soy cream and Straus Family Creamery Raspberry ice cream pump up the berry intensity.

With brownies — Luna & Larry's Coconut Bliss Cappuccino or Three Twins Mocha Difference ice cream offer coffee- flavored refreshment. Also fun: Ben & Jerry's Peanut Butter Cup or Rice Dream Mint Carob Chip.

With apple or peach pies — Three Twins Dad's Cardamom, Snoqualmie Honey Cinnamon or Ginger, and Double Rainbow soy cream in Cinnamon Caramel each lend spicy depth.

With cream scones and angel food cake — Top thick slices with Snoqualmie's Lemon Perfection frozen custard, French Lavender ice cream, or Ciao Bella's Lemon Sorbetto. Also try: Devonshire cream and fresh organic berries.
