PCC | Raw milk notice

Raw milk notice

PCC has withdrawn fluid raw milk due to management’s assessment of risk and liability.

We have had no known illnesses from raw cow milk from Jackie's Jerseys or raw goat milk from St. John's Creamery.

We made this decision because raw milk is a higher risk food, especially for children, pregnant women and people with compromised immune systems. While Washington State still allows for the retail sale of raw milk, we have concerns about the reliability of being able to ensure, on an ongoing basis, the safety of raw milk.

We know that we have a small but committed group of customers for raw milk and we are sorry to disappoint them.

  • For a list of retailers selling raw milk from Jackie's Jersey visit www.jackiesjerseymilk.com.
  • For a list of retailers selling raw milk from St. John's Creamery call the creamery at 206-909-5055.

If you have additional questions or concerns, please call the co-op office at 206-547-1222 during business hours and ask for Trudy Bialic, Diana Crane or Goldie Caughlan.

A quick primer

  • Homogenization — This common process breaks milk fat into particles so small they combine with the milk rather than float to the surface. Cream-top milk, for example, is not homogenized.
  • Ultra-pasteurized — Milk is heated to or above 280° F for at least two seconds to kill harmful bacteria and extend its shelf life far beyond that of traditionally pasteurized dairy products.
  • Acidophilus — A probiotic, or beneficial bacteria, that's added to milk to aid with digestion.
