Delicious, eco-friendly coffee

The superb quality of coffee in the Northwest is a point of community pride. At PCC, we take it a step further. We want to know that each and every bean we buy, bag or brew is grown in harmony with the environment and, with respect for the farmers who raise each plant to maturity.

At PCC, our entire selection of coffee beans — including the beans used in our espresso bars — is organic, shade-grown, fairly traded and, since May 2010, locally roasted. Learn more about fair trade coffee and see a slideshow of Peruvian coffee harvesting.

Our local coffee roasters

Enjoy the journey as you sample roasts from our wonderful team of roasters:

  • Equal Exchange — A variety of roasts from a fellow co-op, in Cafe Nica French Roast, dark or decaffeinated Breakfast Blend, Mind, Body & Soul (a balanced brew that smells of butterscotch and tastes like cocoa and caramelized sugar) and Love Buzz (a complex blend that tastes of chocolate, vanilla and wine and smells like toffee and molasses).
  • Fidalgo Bay Coffee — You'll find their Nature's Crest Organic beans in Breakfast Blend, decaf, espresso and French roast. Locally roasted in Burlington, Wash.
  • Kalani Organica — We carry Kalani's espresso roast, Ethiopia blend, French roast and Swiss Water decaf (a process that removes 97 percent of caffeine from the coffee without the use of chemical solvents). Locally roasted in Seattle.
  • Tony's Coffee — We offer Tony's in Carmelita (a smooth, medium roast with sweet cocoa and caramel notes), French roast, Songbird Blend (a blend of light and dark roasts) and Sumatra. Locally roasted in Bellingham, Wash.

This means our delicious coffee is grown without pesticides, beneath the canopy of trees that provide habitat for migratory birds throughout Central and South America, including the Swainson's Thrush and Western Tanager. Through our relationships with fair trade organizations, we ensure farmers are paid fair prices. Each piping hot cup of espresso you sip or bag of beans you take home to brew helps provide a living wage — as well as improvements to local roads and water supplies, the construction of health clinics and schools, and more.

To top it all off, all of our coffee is roasted within the Northwest for maximum freshness. You'll find a broad variety on our shelves and in our bulk section including Northwest-based Caffe Ladro, Nature's Crest Organic by Fidalgo Bay Coffee, Kalani Organica and Tony's Coffees & Teas. Even the beans we buy from coffee purveyors based outside of Washington, like Equal Exchange of Massachusetts, are roasted locally.

Tony's tips

  • Coffee tastes best when it’s fresh; try to only buy as much coffee as you use in one week.
  • If possible, grind your beans just before you brew.
  • Know your filter — Use a paper filter for light-roasted and single-origin coffees as it produces a more refined, layered cup of coffee. For medium or dark roasts, a metal filter will accentuate the heavier body and flavor notes.
