Flavorful innovation
While August and September are known to be the prime months for local tomatoes (and that is when local heirloom varieties are available), we can enjoy delicious, locally grown, vine-ripened tomatoes as early as May, thanks to Origin Organic Farms in lower British Columbia.
Using farming techniques that represent a marriage of innovation and tradition, OriginO produces rich, flavorful, organic tomatoes inside 33 acres of greenhouses. This organic greenhouse system is entirely sustainable, developed by president and grower Raymond Wong, who combined his passion for organics and sustainability with degrees in bio-resource engineering and ag engineering.
The tomatoes are grown in a unique soil that consists primarily of compost made from leaves, stems and fruit prunings. The compost is recycled after it has nurtured the plants, as is the water that's used for irrigation.
This sustainable model ultimately leads to a tomato that consistently is rich in flavor and high in quality. Additionally, the greenhouses yield four times more tomatoes than traditional organic crops per acre, and the tomatoes have been found to contain four times more lycopene — a carotenoid that has antioxidant and cancer-preventing properties — than conventionally grown tomatoes.
