Labor practices

Our employees, members, shoppers, producers and suppliers all contribute to our success. Our labor practices focus on fairness, opportunities and respect for the many people who make our business possible.

PCC Employees

Our employees are PCC members and shoppers, too. Many of us were PCC customers before we came to work at PCC. We love our products and share our co-op’s commitment to healthy food and neighborhoods.

PCC is a union employer and has enjoyed a long, positive relationship with our unions, UFCW Local 21 and Local 81. Union members or not, PCC supports all employees and invests in our long-term well-being with:

  • competitive wages, advancement opportunities and flexible work schedules.
  • a comprehensive benefits package including employer-paid health care premiums and medical, vision and dental coverage for staff, spouses, domestic partners and dependent children. Benefits also include employer-paid disability insurance for staff, employee assistance programs, PCC staff discount, and employer-paid retirement plans. All eligible staff have access to PCC's 401 (k) plan for making employee contributions.
  • ongoing job-related skills, product and safety training; instruction in ergonomics, first aid, CPR and contagious illnesses; and free PCC Cooks classes.

PCC also supports staff efforts to live more sustainably. All of us have the option to purchase ORCA passes from PCC at a very low annual cost for commuting to work on any of seven region transit agency participants in the Orca pass program. At work, we breathe easy. Air quality is maintained through our fragrance-free policy, and our cleaning and sanitizing procedures at all locations prohibit chemical use unless required by health dept. regulations. Only very low VOCs, non-polluting paints and finishes are used in our stores, and mechanical systems provide positively pressurized, filtered fresh air year-round. Waste management practices throughout our stores and business office ensure an eco-friendly workplace for all employees.

PCC staff also enjoy unlimited organic, Fair Trade CertifiedTM coffee and tea at work!

PCC Business Partners

Concern for the people vital to our business extends beyond our employees to include our many growers, producers, manufacturers and suppliers. The employment of fair labor practices by our partners is a requirement for any business relationship we maintain.

Our merchandisers work closely with socially responsible producers and suppliers of the locally sourced products we sell. We import products that are Fair Trade CertifiedTM or subject to proprietary programs that ensure, at the very least, safe working conditions and fair compensation for growers and workers.

Fair Trade CertifiedTM means that Fair Trade USA, a member of Fairtrade Labelling Organizations International (FLO) and the only third-party certifier of fairly trade products in the United States, has ensured that specific criteria have been met in how a product was produced and traded. Criteria apply to environmental and social conditions where products originate, as well as economic considerations. Certification applies to agricultural products among which coffee, tea and chocolate are the most prevalent. Fresh fruit, flowers, rice, vanilla and herbs are also certified by Fair Trade USA.

A proprietary program incorporating fair labor practices and tied to all the bananas sold at PCC is GROW (Giving Resources and Opportunities to Workers).
