Nutrition & fun facts

  • Blueberries are one of the rare fruits native to North America. For many centuries, they were important to the continent’s residents as a food, medicine and fabric dye.
  • They grow well across the United States and southern Canada. Michigan, Georgia, and Washington are top producers, and they’re the official state berry of Maine and New Jersey.
  • Blueberries are an excellent source of vitamin C, manganese and fiber. They’re also loaded with numerous antioxidants that give them a reputation as a superfood. The obvious bonus: kids usually love them!

Cucumbers Add to list

Nutrition & fun facts

  • Cucumbers have been cultivated since 8,000 B.C. Today, China grows the most cucumbers in the world, followed by Iran, Turkey, Russia and the United States.
  • Cucumbers are made of 95% water, and don’t get much attention for their nutritional value. However, their skins and seeds are loaded with unusual cucurbitacins, lignans, and flavonoids that may offer myriad health benefits.
  • The mild flavor and crunch of cucumbers make them approachable to most kids, but peeling them and scooping out the seedy pulp from the center can help, as can grating them for salads or yogurt dip.
