Can organic farming feed the world?

We know that organic agriculture is better for our health, the economy and the environment, but is it feasible on a large scale? Can it feed the world’s hungry — a billion people?

Yes! In fact, according to a 2008 UN Environment Programme (UNEP) report, organic agriculture not only can feed the world, it also may be the only way to solve hunger in developing countries.

In an analysis of 114 farming projects in 24 African countries, the UNEP reported that organic or near-organic practices resulted in a yield increase of more than 100 percent. Read The Rodale Institute’s December 2008 report The Organic Green Revolution (PDF), to learn more.
