Reading food labels for GE ingredients
Genetically-engineered (GE) corn and soy are easy to avoid in whole form if you buy organic, but non-organic corn and soy appear in many processed foods in different forms.
When reading labels, if the following ingredients aren't listed as being organic, they're likely from GE corn or soy:
Corn flour and meal, corn syrup, fructose and fructose syrup (unless specified non-corn), sorbitol, malt, malt syrup, malt extract, dextrin, maltodextrin, mono- and diglycerides, baking powder (corn starch is the usual filler, try the corn-free "Featherweight" brand at PCC), starch, food starch, modified food starch, confectioner's sugar (PCC sells organic!), monosodium glutamate, vitamins that do not state "corn-free."
Most miso, soy sauce, tamari, shoyu, teriyaki marinades, tofu, soy beverages, tempeh, textured vegetable protein (usually soy), soy protein isolate or protein isolate, lecithin or soy lecithin. Many non-stick sprays rely on soy lecithin. Bread, pastry, margarine, mayonnaise and salad dressings also may include lecithin.
