Please take a few minutes to write the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) about its recommendation to approve genetically engineered (GE) salmon - the first genetically engineered animal meant for human consumption.
FDA is taking public comments through February 25. At this point, it appears FDA is likely to approve engineered salmon after the comment period ends.
FDA has recommended approval of the GE salmon as a "new animal drug," meaning the genetically engineered salmon is subjected to a less rigorous safety review than if it were classified as a food additive.
Learn about how
GE salmon poses threats to human health, the environment and the economy.
More than 300 environmental, consumer, health, animal welfare, salmon and fishing associations, food companies, chefs and restaurants filed a joint statement opposing approval. Scientists from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the U.S Fish and Wildlife Service also have raised concern.
PCC opposes approval of GE salmon and believes the least we should do is label it. Washington Initiative I-522 would require labels on GE fish.
There are two things you can do:
Sign the petition telling FDA not to approve GE salmon! »
Submit your own comment to FDA! »
The deadline for comments is February 25.
