A diet centered around plant foods such as fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, grains, and beans is considered one of the most health-promoting diets due to the rich range of nutrients it offers. “Plant-based” does not mean a completely vegetarian diet, which is wise, as certain nutrients are better obtained from animal foods. Nick Rose, PCC Nutrition Educator, leads this discussion.
This nutrition talk is in conjunction with the Burke Museum's exhibit “Hungry Planet: What the World Eats.” Hungry Planet examines how people from different countries and cultures feed their families, through photographs of 10 families from around the world at home, at the market, and surrounded by a week’s worth of groceries. The exhibit also features “Salish Bounty: Traditional Native American Foods of Puget Sound,” which explores 5,000 years of traditional tribal diets, as well as the revitalization of native food traditions.
