PCC and Seattle Children's partner to help local families
5% of sales on select items sold at PCC donated to Seattle Children's
Seattle, Wash., April 13, 2009 — PCC Natural Markets (PCC) and Seattle Children's Hospital have joined forces to help local families in need. Starting May 1 and running through June 15, PCC will donate 5% of "Kid Picks" product sales, up to a total of $10,000, to support Seattle Children's as part of the "Families Helping Families" program.
To be a PCC Kid Pick, a product must be approved by two-thirds of the thirty plus child "judges" who test it during tastings on the Kid Picks Mobile conducted at PCC stores, community events and schools.
"The goal of the PCC Kid Picks program is to help shoppers find healthy and popular food choices that their families will like," said Sara Walsh, PCC's Community Relations Manager. All 1,500 Kid Picks products are flagged in PCC stores with bright orange signs touting them as "Kid-tested and approved products," and will also be listed in a new searchable product database launching May 1 at pcckidpicks.com.
On Saturday, May 2, PCC and Seattle Children's will kick off the Families Helping Families promotion with community events at the Edmonds, Redmond and Issaquah PCC stores featuring pancake breakfasts, scavenger hunts and treats for kids.
Kids at the Edmonds PCC will participate in a unique experiment provided by the Seattle Children's Science Adventure Lab — a hands-on experience isolating strawberry DNA. "One of the best ways children learn is through real-world experiences," said Amanda Jones, PhD, director of Seattle Children's Health & Science Education Outreach Program. "So when they feel that joy of discovery firsthand, it can spark a passion for science and health that can last a lifetime."
The Science Adventure Lab, a state-of-the-art mobile science lab will travel to schools beginning September using exciting experiments to show the science behind health issues like obesity and asthma.
