Washington Tilth Producers of Washington

Goldie Caughlan, PCC Nutrition Educator

Goldie Caughlan, PCC's nutrition education manager, received this award for her many decades of commitment to the principles of organic agriculture and advocacy on behalf of organic farmers in the Northwest and across the country. The award also recognized Goldie's many years of service on the WA State Organic Advisory Board and the National Organic Standards Board and her work as a member Tilth Producers' Advisory Council.

Goldie Caughlan appointed to Cornucopia Institute's Board of Directors
The board of directors for The Cornucopia Institute voted unanimously for Goldie Caughlan, PCC's nutrition education manager, to join them as a member. The Cornucopia Institute is a farm policy research group that advocates economic justice for family-scale farming communities. It also directs the Organic Integrity Project which watchdogs corporate practices to insure the integrity of organic standards.

A PCC employee since 1983, and a former member of the PCC Board of Trustees and the National Organic Standards Board, Goldie also serves on the Washington Small Farm Advisory Board of the Washington State Dept. of Agriculture.

PCC was recognized by the Northwest Center (NWC), the largest community service organization serving children and adults with disabilities in the Pacific Northwest
Nancy Taylor, PCC's director of human resources, accepted the "Outstanding Employer" award from Northwest Center on PCC's behalf.

PCC Honored as "Outstanding Employer" by Northwest Center.
PCC was recognized by the Northwest Center (NWC), the largest community service organization serving children and adults with disabilities in the Pacific Northwest, at a special luncheon on Sept. 28. PCC was chosen as "Outstanding Employer" due to the long-standing relationship between the two organizations.

Several NWC clients have been productively employed at PCC and two NWC collection bins are hosted by PCC. Of the 400 bins in the NWC system, the top producer is located at the West Seattle PCC; the tenth highest producer is at the View Ridge PCC. Nancy Taylor, PCC's director of human resources, accepted the award on PCC's behalf.

U.S. Green Building Council — LEED® Gold Certification — Redmond PCC
The exceptional design, construction and operation of PCC's Redmond store resulted in it being the first grocery store to be awarded LEED Gold Certification. LEED is a "whole-building" rating system developed by the U.S. Green Building Council that evaluates building projects according to specific criteria that support human and environmental health, and is the industry standard of measurement for "green" building.

Seattle Weekly — "Best Grocery Store"
The annual "Best of Seattle Readers' Poll" conducted by the Seattle Weekly resulted in PCC's selection as "Best Grocery Store." Accompanying the announcement in the newspaper's August 1 issue was the comment that "They [PCC] knew organic before there was organic."

ParentMap magazine — "Best Grocery Store"
The results of the annual "ParentMap Picks Reader Survey" were published in July and PCC was voted "Best Grocery Store." In summarizing reader comments, the publication said: "Readers love PCC's high standards for fresh, natural foods and its huge selection of organic produce."

King County (WA) Solid Waste Division — "Best Workplace for Recycling"
PCC was among 21 King County businesses — and the only grocery store — named as a "Best Workplace for Recycling." The award was given to companies that have shown leadership and commitment to making recycling and other waste reduction practices part of routine business operations.

Supermarket News/Whole Health magazine — "Fit 25"
PCC was named "Best Co-op" in the 2007 Whole Health Sourcebook, a publication of Supermarket News. PCC and twenty-four other companies were profiled on the "Fit 25" list, an acknowledgement of "businesses that take chances in an effort to move health and wellness one step closer to consumers." PCC's profile states "It's taken principled positions on complicated issues that matter to its members."
