Help love win.
PCC helps Peter Deng realize his dream.
May 28, 2004 — An outpouring of generous support from PCC shoppers and our community is helping one man realize a simple wish — to get married.
Four years ago, after enduring a decade of life in limbo in the African bush and in Kenyan refugee camps, Peter Deng was relocated to the U.S. with the help of the United Nations and Lutheran Services. Today, the 21 year-old is a graduating senior from Seattle's Ingraham High School, works part-time at PCC's View Ridge store and is preparing to attend college.
Peter, who was among thousands of Sudanese child refugees known as the "Lost Boys," is hoping to return to Africa to marry his fiancée, Yar, who remains in a refugee camp in Kenya. In order to marry Yar, Peter must also provide her family with a traditional dowry — a herd of cattle.
So, his coworkers at PCC organized a parking lot sale with the goal of raising $2,000 to help Peter with the expenses associated with plane tickets and the dowry. The sale, which was held at PCC's View Ridge store on Saturday, May 22 and Sunday, May 23, raised more than $6,500 and helped capture the attention of local television stations and newspapers.
A second benefit sale for Peter
On Saturday, June 12 and Sunday, June 13, PCC will hold a second benefit sale for Peter from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. in our View Ridge store's parking lot at 6514 40th Ave. N.E. If you have items you would like to donate to the sale, they can be dropped off at our View Ridge store starting Tuesday, June 8. Donations can also be made to the Peter Deng Fund via U.S. Bank.
PCC thanks our community neighbors for sharing their time and money to help Peter realize his dream. Thanks also to Abbey Party Rents for the use of a tent and tables for the sale and the Northwest Center for a donation pick-up truck.
